Former Minnesota University Professor Lectures on "Management of TMJDs"
Professor Mohamed El Deeb, a former professor at the University of Minnesota in the USA, lectured on the MANAGEMENT OF TEMPOROMANDIBULAR DISORDERS' or TMJDs last December 14, 2011 at 7th Floor of the RCsDP An Namuthajiyah Campus. This first-ever lecture of Prof. Mohamed El Deeb in RCsDP was attended by more than 80 faculty members, postgraduate students from Riyadh Colleges of Dentistry and Pharmacy and other affiliated Saudi Board clinics and hospitals.

Professor Mohamed El Deeb, an Egyptian by birth, began teaching at the School of Dentistry at the University of Minnesota in 1980, Minnesota, United States of America. He was a tenured associate professor by mid-1990, and was promoted to full professorship in mid-1991 by the University of Minnesota, School of Dentistry.

It was a great honor and privilege for RCsDP to be visited by a well-respected and distinguished personality as Prof. Mohamed, a long-time friend of Prof. Abdullah Al Shammery, RCsDP Rector. As he introduced him to the audience, Prof. Abdullah mentioned that Prof. Mohamed was a most-sought-after speaker. He has been truly active in both research and training. He pointed out that they were fortunate that Prof. Mohamed accepted his invitation to come to RCsDP and share his knowledge and expertise.

In his lecture, Prof. Mohamed gave details about Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJDs or TMDs) or TMJ syndrome, an umbrella term covering acute or chronic inflammation of the Temporomandibular Joint, which connects the mandible to the skull. The disorder and resultant dysfunction can result in significant pain and impairment because it transcends the boundaries between several health care disciplines in particular; dentistry and neurology. He added that there are a variety of treatment approaches for the disorder, however.

Prof. Mohamed explained that the Temporomandibular Joint is susceptible to many of the conditions that affect other joints in the body, including ankylosis, arthritis, trauma, dislocations, developmental anomalies, neoplasia and reactive lesion and signs and symptoms of TMJD vary in their presentation and can be very complex, but are often simple. He said that on the average, the symptoms will involve more than one of the numerous TMJ components: muscles, nerves, tendons, ligaments, bones, connective tissue, and the teeth. Ear pain associated with the swelling of proximal tissue is a symptom of Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, he added.

He also explained that as part of the "Pain Management Program" which can surely help doctors solve this type of disorder, it is important for those afflicted to get their aggressions out in a healthy way. Exercise is a good way to do this because it helps the body to release endorphins, which relieve and reduce stress which causes or aggravates TMJDs.

Prof. Mohamed also gave a visual presentation about the TMJ internal derangement and its signs and symptoms. The illustrations gave his listeners very good ideas on how the disorder happens and occurs among patients.

After his lecture, Professor Mohamed gave his audience the opportunity to ask some questions to help them clarify certain knowledge they acquired from his talk. An actual demonstration to show what Temporomandibular Joint Disorder is all about was given by Prof. Mohamed in the clinic after the open forum.

"Doing the best in all that we do is needed in order to become achievers!" said Prof. Mohamed, an indication of his dedication and love for his profession, his expertise in the field and his great achievements.

Professor Abdullah Al Shammery presented Prof. Mohamed El Deeb with a plaque and some gifts as tokens of RCsDP's appreciation and gratitude for his visit and lecture. It will remain a worthy remembrance of RCsDP to Prof. Mohammed as well as a symbol of the partnership between the two of them in providing continuing education in dentistry in this part of the world.
